Connecting to the Wider World

Connecting to the Wider World

Passion, Perspective and Making a Difference

Connecting to the Wider World is a presentation and/or workshop designed to help create a lens through which composers, performers and conductors can choose and perform works that can connect with and engage audiences on a socially meaningful level. Through connecting with each other and our audiences, we can make a difference in our musical lives and beyond. Music can serve as a conduit through which people can develop a better understanding of, and relationship with the world.

MUSIC can connect people in ways beyond notes on a page.

PASSION & PERSPECTIVE

Beginning with passion and/or purpose, musicians can engage the community and each other. Are there values and opportunities in your community to connect with others through music? I examine how composers, through their passions, can explore and present various perspectives to enhance the music’s meaning; how performers and conductors, through understanding multiple viewpoints can add nuance to better connect with audiences. Infusing a piece of music with passion, purpose and perspective entails reaching out to others to relate on a deeper level, to find commonalities, understanding and opportunities to unify people.

ADVOCACY

Music created around shared values, passions and purpose can increase the visibility of the music of our time and make a difference. Music can advocate for the human, social, environmental and equitable context of our communities. Works by living composers that are relevant to our time can powerfully raise the awareness of the social and global issues we care about. Advocacy begins locally and expands globally.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Our collective musical expression can be a pathway for communicating understanding and expressing our human experience. People bring their own perspectives to any artistic experience. By being open to audience members as well as musicians, we can broaden our collective interpretation of the music and of the subject matter musically expressed.  Widening awareness can bring change. What legacy are we leaving our descendants?
